“When something can be read without effort, great effort has gone into its writing.”
~Enrique Jardiel Poncela
The quotation above is especially true when it comes to writing resumes and cover letters. In a study I found published in 2012, by TheLadders, an online job search site, readers reported spending only 6 seconds reviewing resumes on average before deciding if they would read any further. That’s not very long, which is why it is critical that they find what they are looking for immediately. You don’t want them to have to connect the dots, because they won’t take the time. Your resume needs to make it obvious you are perfect for the job, and it needs to be able to do so in 6 seconds.
As with many writing projects, people often find resume and cover letter writing overwhelming. Many aren’t sure what to do, or where to start. Having an experienced resume writer can really simplify that process for you, while simultaneously preparing you for interviews. That’s not a typo. Going through the process of writing a good resume, tailored specifically for the job you want, should help prepare you for an interview for that job.
A resume is not a list of every job you have ever had, and what you did. Although some of that information is relevant, the key is to know what to omit, what to include, and how to present it. When helping someone with a job search, I very rarely advocate sending out the same resume and cover letter to multiple employers. Your resume is more likely to open the door to an interview if it is tailored to each job that you pursue.
Frequently my clients find that just by setting aside some time to talk through their resume with me, they are better able to focus on what they want to say, and how to say it. I can offer the following services:
- reviewing a resume that you have written,
- modifying an existing resume to better suit a different job,
- updating an old resume to show more recent experience or education,
- restyling your resume with a more effective format,
- developing strategies to handle specific challenges you need to address (changing careers, gaps in employment history, or re-entering the workforce, for example),
- walking you through the process of writing a resume so you can do it yourself,
- or I can write one “from scratch” for you.
Please contact me if you need assistance in any of these areas. I’d love to help!
